Shortly after the Power Plant was finished, it was discovered that the tail-race water level was, at times, too high, resulting in loss of power output. In the 1940's the Company decided that this problem could be alleviated by widening a channel further down river using both blasting and mechanical digging to allow water to flow more quickly. This was the Point A development.
Harold Bowman, the brother of Freddie, was the operator of the Marion shovel used on the project. He actually drove it by land down to Point A for the excavation.
