The Larson Family: Island Falls 1950-1956
Carl Helmer Larson was born September 4, 1916 on the family homestead near Rose Valley, Saskatchewan. He moved along with his family to Creighton, SK in 1934.
Gladys Strand was born June 21, 1921 on the family homestead in Bengough, SK. They met in Flin Flon, MB, in 1942 and were married March 1944.
It was in 1950 that Helmer accepted Rees Davis' offer of a job in Island Falls, bringing with him Gladys and their two daughters Karen (5) and Glenda (2), with Donalda on the way. Helmer's brother Ernie joined the family in 1951. Helmer worked alongside Slim Woods in Transportation (trucks, cats and bombardiers).
Our family enjoyed the many friendships that were created in the close-knit community of the Falls. As children, we enjoyed the many activities that were available: bowling, badminton, swimming lessons in the swimming hole, catching tadpoles, and the Christmas concerts.
In the spring of 1956, we moved to Creighton where Duane and Dennis were born. It was quite an adjustment re-entering the "real world”!
In 1984, Gladys and Helmer moved to Alberta to be closer to their family. Gladys passed away August 1994 and Helmer in March 1995. We look back on our time in Island Falls with many fond memories.
